Drawing Solace
A short play
by Kim L. Wheeler
(Winner of the IdeasTap Playwriting Opportunity Competition)

“Drawing Solace” is a play based loosely on true events.

Having previously served their country, four ex-servicemen are now serving time in prison. Each harbours a deep-set resentment that society has failed them.

Pat Deakin, a struggling arts-cafe owner, takes a purely commercial interest in their plight. He capitalises on the men’s feelings of frustration and injustice and commissions them to use art as a catalyst to release their inner demons.

As the artwork develops, Pat takes a strange and uplifting journey into the psyche of each man. It becomes evident to him, through their choice of subject matter, that all is not as he had expected. Each man’s cathartic take on what forms an injustice to them, is both unique and moving.

Pat’s story becomes not about making profit but understanding better the long term implications of war both on the soldiers and himself.
